Shiprock is the core of an ancient volcano which never erupted. Over time the surrounding rock layers were erroded away leaving the harder basalt core standing alone. The wall along the left side is where magma filled an underground fissure forming the long basalt dike. Shiprock can be seen from over 40 miles away.
